Mark these dates down now, for the 12th SMU-RM Western Circuit Sailing Regatta is back this August – bigger and better! Held on 4 race days over 3 weekends, this Singapore Sailing sanctioned keelboat regatta is one of Singapore’s biggest premier sailing events, attracting top local teams with its challenging races and vibrant post-race parties.

This annual favorite in the sailing calendar is held off the waters of Raffles Marina, ideally situated away from the busy shipping lanes that crisscross the region, and is scheduled to coincide with the South West monsoon. Racing in the Western Johore Straits is invariably challenging and packed with spills and thrills as the monsoon kicks in and the winds pick up.

Tactically challenging windward-leeward races are held on the first and fourth race days, with two passage races planned for the second and third race days adding some variation to the usual round-the-mark sailing. Donated by the Singapore Management University President, Professor Howard Hunter, the passage race on the third day is known as the SMU President’s Cup. This Challenge Cup was launched in conjunction with the 10th Western Circuit Sailing Regatta, and has been hotly contested ever since.

With SMU students injecting their signature vibrancy and enthusiasm in organising this regatta, the SMU-RM Western Circuit Sailing Regatta promises much and has always delivered. So block out these dates and see you at the start line on 16th August 2009!
